Tomorrow I close a book of my life... not a chapter... a book. For the last 14 years I've gotten up everyday, and gone to my parents business where I started in the mailroom, and worked up to management level from there. While I'm so excited to begin the 1st chapter in the new book of my life, closing the old comes with some tears (as change invariably does).
While I doubt I'll miss the job I will miss the relationships. Relationships at work are unique ones. If you work full-time you spend a majority of your waking hours with these people, and it can be fabulous, or it can be horrible. In my tenure I've experienced both. These people see all aspects of your personality as much as your family. They know all the minor, and major details of your life.
Tomorrow I say good-bye to a woman I've worked with for 13 of the last 14 years, that's like knowing someone from kindergarten to senior year. I'm not ready to say good-bye. She's one of those people that I always think "Oh... I can't wait to tell Sue that". While we promise to stay in touch, and maybe we will, I know it will never be the same. Nothing can replace the daily chats... talking about what we watched on TV last night (Friends, ER, Prison Break, etc), how Madalynn slept, how her sons are doing (who were 3 & 6 when we started working together, and now one is in college, & the other is going to get his learner's permit in the fall). She was with me when I got the phone call telling me about Madalynn. She's listened to my dating (or lack thereof) woes. She's always had a kind, encouraging word, a listening ear and great advice for whatever was going on. I count her as one of my best friends.

I'm praying for you and sending hugs as you prepare for this new chapter in your life :)
Terri,
Today we celebrated a retirement of a coworker who has been at my office for 20 years - I've been there 18 of those. Tomorrow is his last day. We are not as close as you and Sue but it will be odd to not have him there in "his" office. I'm sure Sue will miss you too. I'm so excited for you - a week off then a new at home job. In situations like this I always think of the song line that says - "Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end." It's the closing of a book but look ahead to the new book you get to start.
Karen
It is very hard to say goodbye and I've had to a couple of times but I am so excited for you as you begin the next celebration in your life. Best wishes.
What a special friend you have!
Hugs!
Hey friend...praying for you...I have been there several times in the last 14 years and I know the heartache and joy of change. I am praying for you. It will take effort on both of your parts to keep your co-worker close; but, it can work. Here's to a wonderful new chapter in your life. I owe you a phone call...sorry...will call soon. Hugs, E
