Confessions of a single heart

***I've been working on this post for awhile... trying to get the thoughts in my head clear enough to put down & I want to preface this that I'm not assuming to know about infertility or the pain & hurt someone deals with in that struggle. Nor am I thinking marriage is the end all be all answer to life woes.  I'm speaking from the heart of one who aches to have a family unit.

Someone asked me awhile back if I was adopting because I was unable to have children.  I said I didn't know if I could or couldn't have children b/c I'd never tried to have children.  I have no reason to think I can't, although now my age would be an issue as I'd be considered an 'elderly' pregnancy, at the ripe old age of 36.

I've always had a heavy heart for couples who long to be parents, and have to struggle with infertility.  Perhaps because I know the longing to be a parent just in a different way.  My longing for a child encompassed my longing to be married, and share my life with someone, and build a family & life together.

Singleness is similar to infertility in that the core of your being aches to have, and become something that you feel powerless to achieve.  If you have a relationship with Christ you cry, shout, talk, pray, bargain, and in the end  choose to trust Him, very often more than once.  It's a continual surrender.

Both are dreams,  for some, like me,  a lifelong dream.  For some the dream of a spouse or a child will come, just later than originally planned.  For others that dream will never be fullfilled, and that is a loss.

When you experience other losses in your life there is usually some acknowledgement of the loss.  When there is a death, family and friends rally around you.  You are upheld, prayed for, and have meals cooked for you.  You have a traditional ceremony to acknowledge the loss,  say good-bye, and celebrate the life that was lived.

When you are grieving the loss of an unfullfilled dream there are no ceremonies.  There is no set point in time to stop, and acknowledge it.  To have friends, and family rally around you.

You go through peaks and valleys in the longing.  Sometimes you have periods of time where you really feel as if you're over it, and have come to a point of accepting your life single.  You embrace it, and say this isn't so bad.  Then it will sneak up on you again so that you have an ache, and emptiness to your very core.

You wonder what's wrong with you that it seems to come so easily to others.  Have you missed opportunities along the way or have you messed them up, and that was your only chance.

Why is God withholding something from you that is a good thing?  A desire put in your heart by God.  Something that is part of His plan going back to creation.

"The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him."  Genesis 2:18

So again you choose to trust.  Trust in the character of God, and the things you know to be true.

  • God is good.
  • God loves us.
  • God is wise.
  • God gives us what we need sometimes before we know we need it.
  • God is sovreign.
  • God's plan goes far beyond this earthly life, and we have to trust that.
  • God's promises are true.

So for this moment I choose to trust in what I know is true, and thank God for the gift of the little girl sleeping down the hall.

Guatemala Ministry

A couple from my agency has just launched a new organization to help the orphans & families of Guatemala... check out their website....Across All Borders. I'm feeling a heart-tug regarding the missions trips... I'll have to go to my knees about that!!

Their first fundraiser is underway...so head over to their website, and order a cookbook!!

The verse on their website speaks so profoundly to my heart regarding something God has been working out in me... I'm processing a post about that to come later....

"Warmer" winter fun....

Today hit the upper 30's.... whoooo-hoooo.... time to get out the kiddie pool.

So, Madalynn & I were outside for a few minutes awhile while I attempted to scrap the ice off my driveway, and walk.

This is an outfit my aunt & uncle gave her for Christmas... I can't even handle it.  I was going to put on her boots but it would have killed the look.  I have a video too, I hope to post later...

Two Milestones

Today marks two milestones for Madalynn & I.

The first is it was 1 year ago that I got the phone call from my agency saying we were ‘OUT’ of PGN.  For those of you familiar with Guatemala adoptions you know how big that is.  It essentially meant the piece of the adoption to bring Madalynn home on the Guatemalan side was done, in the eyes of the Guautemalan government we were officially mother & daughter.  I’m sure as time goes by, dates like this will fade from my memory, but as this is the first year Madalynn & I walk together since her homecoming, I find all these dates still fresh.

Secondly, my baby girl is 18 months old today.  She’s doing so many new things… running, and climbing.  Imaginative play with dolls, and stuffed animals.  Her language seems to have hit fast forward mode, and has many new words,  most recently…

  • Buh-bye’ said with a sweet southern accent (not sure where that comes from).
  • ‘Peese’ for please.
  • ‘Gaz’ for Curious George
  • ‘Where go?’ (with her hands held up for Where’d he/she/it go?")

So many others, I’m forgetting at the moment.  She has a very silly side that is becoming more & more animated everyday.

Life minus a laptop...

I've been having trouble w/ my laptop on & off for the last week or so... well, last night it went... I had to order a new battery & new power cord from Dell, as both seemed to have fried. Hopefully that will fix these issues. All my pix are on there, and of course I was just in the process of backing everything up.

This Winter Thing...

We're having quite a winter this year... ice storms, followed by snow storms, followed by more ice...eeekkkk!!  As I always say, it makes spring that much sweeter.

So, this is the conversation between my Dad & I last Friday....

My Dad(out of the blue); "Does Madalynn have a snowsuit?"

Me; "Does Madalynn need a snowsuit??" (Refer back to any previous post regarding me not being 'outdoorsy'.)

Dad;" Well, we have that nice hill in our back yard, and I wanted to take her sledding."

Me; "Okay... I'll get her a snowsuit"

Fastforward to Friday afternoon when I find a great deal on a snowsuit at Marshall's (and BOOTS!!).

Fastforward to Sunday after another 6-8 inches of snow has fallen.

My Mom calls me...

Mom; "You coming over?  Dad's been working on the sledding trails"

Me; "Sledding trails?"

Mom; "Yes, he's out there with the snowblower... he bought 3 sleds"

Me; "3 sleds??"

Mom; "Yes...now he's going down the hill in one... I just saw an inner tube go sailing by"

Me; Chuckling picturing my 66 year old Dad going sledding, and preparing 'trails' for his 18 month old granddaughter.

She loved it... all the way down & around... she'd say 'Weeehhhh'

Since a picture is worth a thousand words... here they are...

When we put her in the snow she did not want to move... she enjoyed it... but didn't understand she could move her feet.

New Mom Truths

I found this list of 71 new Mom (I'm not sure I still qualify as a 'New Mom') truths on parenting.com.  I was able to smile at more than one.  These were some of my favorites...

You will lose tiny socks in the wash.

You will be able to shower, wash and dry your hair, and get dressed in less than ten minutes.

You won't stop worrying that you'll make your tot bleed when you clip his fingernails.

You won't have the desire or the time to iron the crib skirt after you first wash it. And the wrinkles will drive you crazy. But not crazy enough to dismantle the crib and iron it.

You will never again touch an infant that isn't yours on the hands or face.

You will forget all about your difficult day with your baby when you finally see her sleeping peacefully at night.

You will thank God for caffeine.

You will overbundle your tyke for winter outings.

You will get sick of hearing yourself say, "I didn't get to it yet."

You will feel naked when you walk outside alone.

You will wonder if you could possibly love another child as much as you love this one.

You will put your sweet pea in the ugliest outfit he's got, take an obligatory photo, and send it to the distant relative who purchased the fashion disaster.

You will pack everything your baby could possibly need for a weekend and forget your own eyeglasses or toothbrush.

You will detest traffic  -- it means you're either late getting back home to your child or stuck in the car even longer with a fusspot.

You will crack up when you see your kid get down to music for the first time.

You will hear about criminals on the news and wonder what their moms are doing.

You will wake up feeling sick one morning but will muster the strength to get through the day with your baby because you have to.

You will take waaaay longer to go on your first postbaby getaway than you'd imagined.

You will be excited when your tot grows out of one size and into the next.

You will be sad to put away what he's grown out of.

You will find Cheerios in odd places.

You won't care that she's getting food in her hair when she does "So Big" in her high chair.

You will miss the smell of Dreft once you get the green light to wash infant clothes with yours.

You will write more-heartfelt thank-you notes to anyone who gives a toy without lights, batteries, and noise.

You will marvel at the volumes of unconditional love you have for your most wonderful achievement  -- your baby.
